Practitioner Guang of Dongshan was a native of Zizhou, known in the monastic groves as Guang 'No-Mind.' When he first went wandering on pilgrimage, he asked Venerable Yungai Zhi, "What was the intended meaning of Xinghua striking the karmadāna?" Zhi got down from the rope-chair, spread both hands, stuck out his tongue, and showed it to him. Guang struck him once with his niṣīdana. Zhi said, "This is turned by the power of the wind." Guang also took these words to ask Venerable Shishuang Lin. Lin said, "What is your view?" Guang struck him once with his niṣīdana as well. Lin said, "A good strike with the niṣīdana, only you do not know where it lands." He asked Zhenjing again, and Jing said, "What is your view?" Guang struck him once with his niṣīdana as well. Jing said, "He struck, and you strike too." Guang experienced great awakening at this. Zhenjing thereupon composed a verse: "A great man should make a break, but does not cut it off himself; / Xinghua worked for others, an utterly thorough fellow. / Afterward, it was left to him for his own eyes to open; / Striking him with the staff and fining him money, he drove him out of the monastery."
