When Master Fozhao Gao first resided at Guizong, he practiced the Way with single-minded diligence, never slackening in the least. Deep in the night, after finishing his devotions, he sat by the floor hearth in the Saṅgha hall. Suddenly he saw two monks enter the hall: one had shaggy eyebrows and a snow-white head; the other was a youth. Both had tall and striking figures. Gao was delighted in his heart and said to himself, "There are such monks under my seat!" In a short while the two went out of the hall. Gao followed behind them and saw them enter the Buddha hall. Gao also went in after them. The lamp light shone brilliantly, and there was still fire in the brazier. Gao burned incense and paid homage to the Buddha. The two monks went out again, and he also followed behind them until they reached the front of the Buddha hall, where he unexpectedly lost sight of where they were. He thought to himself, "I forgot my incense box inside the hall." Turning back to fetch it, he saw the doors of the hall were barred and locked. He then called the hall-attendant postulant, Shoushun, to open the door. Shun took the key and opened the door, only to see that the incense smoke in the brazier had not yet dispersed, and the incense box was on the jeweled steps. He did not understand the cause of this. Miaoxi personally heard Fozhao tell this; at that time Shoushun was by his side and still pointed to it as proof.
