The Master said, "Generally, in investigating Chan, one must not claim to be right merely by having sharp wits. Formerly, Master Yungai Zhi's eye of the Way was bright and clear. When the prefect entered the mountain and rested at the Discussion of Emptiness Pavilion, he asked, 'What is the Discussion of Emptiness Pavilion?' Zhi said, 'It is just a Discussion of Emptiness Pavilion.' The prefect was not pleased, and thereupon brought the question to Ben of Mugu. Ben said, 'Just let the pavilion preach the Dharma; what need is there for the mouth to discuss emptiness?' The prefect was pleased, and transferred Ben to reside at Yungai. If one compares Ben with Zhi, they are far apart; thus one knows that the true matter cannot be grasped by sharp wits. Head Monk Yuan of Baofeng was also a person of the Way, but his sharp wits in answering words were slow; Juefan dubbed him 'Yuan Five Dou,' because when he opened his mouth to draw breath, five dou of rice could be cooked before he could answer with a single turning word."
