上堂：「達磨不來東土；二祖不往西天；石室行者蹈碓，忘却移步；玄沙討魚賣峭，蹈翻釣船。且道遮一隊漢，還有衲僧巴鼻也無？」良久云：「當門不用栽荊棘，後代兒孫惹著衣。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said, "Bodhidharma did not come to the Eastern Land; the Second Patriarch did not go to the Western Heavens. The postulant of the stone room trod the pestle and forgot to move his feet; Xuansha angled for fish, put on airs, and overturned the fishing boat. Tell me, does this band of fellows still have the patchrobed monk's handle or not?"
After a long pause, he said, "There is no need to plant brambles in front of the gate; descendants of later generations will snag their robes on them."
