Informal sermon on concluding the summer retreat: "Śākya spoke without speaking; Kāśyapa heard without hearing. The waves on the Heavenly River are stilled; the constellations are clearly distinguished. Thus and thus, there are conclusion and commencement; not thus and not thus, there are neither conclusion nor commencement; thus and not thus, within commencement there is conclusion; not thus and yet thus, within conclusion there is commencement. If suddenly all is not thus, one does not reach the village ahead nor the inn behind, and a thousand or ten thousand people crowded together cannot enter. Like the great sun disc ascending into empty space, those with eyes see it. Its pure radiance is indestructible and unmixed; though dwelling amid myriad colors, it does not blend with anything; its spiritual, marvelous luminosity is chosen without being forged. At such a time, can one still apply the two words 'conclusion and commencement'? Can one still apply the two words 'Buddha Dharma'? Can one still apply the two words 'worldly dharma'? Can one still apply the words 'right and wrong, long and short'? Clearly, one cannot. Why? Have you not heard it said: 'Prajñā is like a great mass of fire—approach it, and your face is scorched away; it is also like a drum smeared with poison—beat it, and all who hear it perish.' Even if the Buddhas of the three periods and the patriarchs of the six generations were to compete in stepping forward, displaying great authority and power, extending broad and long tongues, and preaching horizontally and vertically, all would appear merely within the shadow of its radiance, having entirely no connection with the portion of a patch-robed monk. And tell me, what special ability does a patch-robed monk have? When tired, bent arm pillows the head in sleep, without fear of anyone coming to steal the pillow." He further cited: "Yunmen asked Dongshan, 'Where have you come from recently?' Dongshan said, 'Chadu.' Yunmen said, 'Where did you spend the summer retreat?' Dongshan said, 'At Baoci in Hunan.' Yunmen said, 'When did you leave there?' Dongshan said, 'On the twenty-fifth day of the eighth month.' Yunmen said, 'I spare you three rounds of blows with the staff.' The next day, Dongshan went up to inquire, 'Yesterday I received your pardon of three rounds of blows, but I do not know where my fault was.' Yunmen said, 'You rice-bag! Going off to Jiangxi and Hunan like this!' Dongshan was suddenly greatly enlightened." The master said, "Great Master Yunmen let go too lavishly and gathered in too frugally. In his final earnestness, why did he not give him his proper feed of fodder, instead bringing about muddiness and mixing water? For Dongshan to be enlightened in this way was also like divination by ladle, listening to empty sounds."
