Mazu said: 'Mind is Buddha; neither mind nor Buddha; it is not mind, not Buddha, not a thing.' Revealing it to students like this is just like digging a deep pit, burying someone alive, and then holding a sacrificial offering above it. Deshan had a single white staff: when a Buddha came he struck, when an ancestor came he struck; he also said: 'For thirty years I have never struck one who is uniquely free.' When did he ever dream of the sweat-stink before Bodhidharma had come? For patch-robed monks throughout the twelve periods of the day, in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, it should be like fire scorching water. Do not boast of youth and vigor; do not talk of age and maturity. If you overturn and shatter it in one place, thousands of places and hundreds of places are penetrated all at once—like the lion king roaring with open jaws, standing like a wall of ten thousand cubits. Would that not be the joy of a lifetime? When a person fortunately has such majesty and light, and fortunately has such enjoyment, yet is unwilling to turn around and look for themselves, they mostly sit within others' speech and silence, until their whole lives end with nothing established. If you wish to understand easily, you need not be stuck under three rafters; just remain unbroken amidst the heap of adversity and prosperity, feeling the effort saved—then the time of bankrupting the family and scattering the house has arrived.
