Holding the heroic character and true colors that uphold the lineage and establish the teaching, the itinerant practitioner does not wander through prefectures and hunt through counties to view the scenery and pass the time. One must make the two words 'birth and death' one's priority, directly shouldering them, leaping out of the ruts of annihilation and permanence, recognizing where the ancestral fields and gardens lie, gathering the contracts and deeds so that each and every one is clear, and not letting others encroach upon one's borders. Afterward, seeing the Buddha, kill the Buddha; seeing the ancestors, kill the ancestors; exhaustively ruining the livelihood of past ancestors without any regard or attachment, wearing tattered and dirty clothes, entering the ranks of demonic hordes and doing everything. Looking up, unashamed before Heaven; looking down, unashamed before humanity; dull and unpolished, not turning one's head even if struck by a great staff, trapped by neither thousands nor tens of thousands of people. Once the karmic conditions are ripe and one is pushed forward by others, one speaks babble and nonsense upon the curved chair, deceiving the worthy and defrauding the sages. What worldly people cannot speak of, one speaks of completely; what worldly people cannot do, one does completely. Bystanders feel their faces burn and sweat pour down for him, while he remains leisurely, his demeanor dignified. Even reaching such a ground still does not match the spirit of upholding the orthodox lineage—how much less if from the start one is led into the grass thicket by false teachers, having one's tongue sweetened with sugar and honey water? As soon as there is a slight taste of coptis root, one avoids it; such a person remains useless forever. The ultimate essential of studying the Way has no other method: one must firmly rely upon the method of biting dogs and pigs, eating what has no flavor, withstanding the tongs and hammer, being smelted thousands of times and forged tens of thousands of times until the mind is stripped bare and completely devoid of the principles of the Buddha-dharma. Just investigating like this, as when learning archery, after a long time one naturally hits the mark; this is truly no deception.
