行脚高士，跳出荊棘林，踏翻獅子窟，周行無轍跡，四顧絕遮攔，見佛祖如生冤家、聞禪道如風過樹，向祖師門下尚未得其髣髴，何況末上立志不堅，扶籬摸壁，隈隈𣯧𣯧？二十四氣一時發現，隨群逐隊也道撥草瞻風，見善知識輕輕撥著便見魂飛膽喪，若無定龍蛇眼目如何辨別？豈不見，雲峯悅見大愚芝，首聞「大家相聚喫莖韲」之語，便乃倒戈卸甲，然後歷試諸難。初無玄妙語與之商確，只云：「佛法未怕爛却。」考其心肝，見其壯志，過如鐵橛子，逐引入堂司。一日坐，後架桶篐爆墮地，激發本地風光，明見本來面目，走到方丈，口似磉盤，知他底裏如何？密庵口門窄，不能為汝說，歸到荊棘林中，考瞎禿必為道破。

Eminent masters of pilgrimage jump out of the bramble forest, overturn the lion's cave, travel without leaving tracks, and look around in all directions with all obstruction cut off; they see the buddhas and patriarchs like living mortal enemies, and hear Chan and the Way like wind passing through trees. At the gate of the ancestral masters they have not yet caught its resemblance; how much less can those who initially lack firm determination, leaning on hedges and feeling along walls, cowering and shrinking? The twenty-four solar terms all appear at once; following the crowd and pursuing the herd, they also speak of parting the grass and looking into the wind, but when seen by a good friend who lightly prods them, their souls fly and their gall bladders are struck with terror. If one does not have the eyes to discern dragons and snakes, how can one distinguish? Have you not seen that when Yunfeng Yue saw Dayu Zhi, upon first hearing the words "Let everyone gather to eat a stalk of pickled vegetable," he immediately laid down his weapons and stripped off his armour, and thereafter went through various hardships? At first there were no profound or wondrous words discussed with him; he merely said: "The Buddha Dharma is not afraid of rotting away." Examining his heart and liver, seeing that his bold resolve surpassed an iron stake, he was then led into the hall director's office. One day while sitting, the hoop of a bucket at the rear latrine burst and fell to the ground, sparking the scenery of his fundamental ground, clearly seeing his original face. He ran to the abbot's quarters, his mouth gaping like a plinth stone. Who knows what was inside him? Mi'an's mouth is narrow; I cannot speak it for you. Return to the bramble forest, and the blind, shave-headed old fellow will surely break it open for you.
