Attained in the mind, it responds at the hands, like a pearl rolling in a dish, turning of itself without being nudged. In the twelve two-hour periods, bending and turning, bowing down and looking up, entering the demon king's palace to probe the tiger's cave, climbing mountains of swords and scaling trees of daggers—this is the place where one's steps are genuinely effective. Then one can enter with this mind into the heap of worldly dust, amid adverse and favourable realms, mixing mud with water alongside all people, pulling out wedges and extracting nails, causing them to be unaware and unknowing. Suddenly thoroughly seeing the fundamental mind and awakening to one's fundamental nature as not being inside, not being outside, and not being in the middle—with everyone's nostrils reaching the heavens and each person standing like a cliff of ten thousand fathoms—only then does one dare to be called a traveler of the Way on pilgrimage. If one merely clings to a single dynamic or a single realm, sitting all day in cold stillness waiting for an awakening to arrive, then one is a demonic spawn who ruins the orthodox lineage of Bodhidharma. You should reflect upon this carefully.
