When genuine, seasoned students of the Way enter the monasteries and meet spiritual mentors, determined to see clearly into the great matter of their own birth and death, they invariably possess the mettle of a man who can kill without batting an eye. Without thinking back or calculating forward, risking their lives without any regard, they press on vigorously, focusing their minds on this one point to investigate it without slackening day or night. Suddenly they see through it with one glance, bite it through with one bite, and from top to bottom the whole being is one great gate of liberation—vivid and lively. Seeing the Buddhas and seeing the patriarchs is like looking at worn-out straw sandals; hearing of Chan and the Way is like the wind striking the trees. Yet even this is not the place to anchor. It is the very time to enter the great furnace and be forged, so that all feelings and calculations of the sacred and profane are thoroughly cleansed. Penetrating the vajra hoop, swallowing the thorny chestnut burr, one arrives at the realm of great rest and cessation: body and mind are like withered wood and cold ashes; even a great staff cannot beat one into turning the head; thousands and tens of thousands cannot ensnare one. During the day, one simply stays leisurely; uttering a single word or half a phrase, it is as sharp as a sword propped against the sky, able to kill people and able to bring people to life. In thousands of transformations, lofty and entirely exceeding all standards, all the sages cannot catch sight of it, and all the spirits find no gate through which to gaze upon it. Still, one cannot yet speak with them of the Linji lineage's essential principle; one must further know the move of 'entering the forest without rustling the grass, entering the water without stirring the waves.' And tell me, what is the move of entering the forest without rustling the grass, entering the water without stirring the waves? Go ask the Venerable.
