Everyone naturally possesses a living road that reaches to heaven. When one has not yet trodden upon it, in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down one is like a drunken person, unable to distinguish east from west or tell south from north. But when one day one steps onto the trail and slips right through, going east is up to oneself, and going west is up to oneself; in the end one will not be blindly pointed astray by others into mistaking the right road. Therefore, Old Man Śākya, having stepped onto this road in the end, said: 'Before leaving Tuṣita, he had already descended into the royal palace; before leaving his mother's womb, he had already finished liberating people.' And when he arrived before the assembly of millions on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa, rolling up and unrolling at will, releasing and taking away as the occasion demanded, the devas had no way to offer flowers, and the non-Buddhists could not peek at him in secret—none of it went beyond this one road. Wandering down in the human world, as months and years wore on, people grew accustomed to each other and formed conventions; branches split and factions arose, each taking pride in its own school. Those who presided over its teachings did not follow the right road, but devoted themselves to flattery, deceit, cunning words, and ingratiating manners, leading men and women into the thickets of grass to wallow, fruitlessly undergoing saṃsāra from kalpa to kalpa. Among them, one or two suddenly recognize their own fault, turn around, and approach those who have the Way. Under a single word, the mind-ground opens wide, like the bright sun in the empty sky without a single wisp of cloud—how could one worry about the path not being right? In your future travels, should someone ask you: 'What is the correct path of Jingshan?' just say to him: 'Just ascertain a resolute mind, and you will surely not be deceived.'
