「一人發真歸元，十方虛空𡎺著磕著。便乃以四大為正體；以生死為妙用；以壽齡修短為游戲之場；以畢盡寂滅為歸根得趣。」遂以火炬劃一劃云：「盡從遮裏流出。南上座急諦聽，莫遲疑！斫却那邊無影樹，却來火裏倒抽枝。」

"When one person uncovers truth and returns to the source, the empty space of the ten directions is knocked into and collided with. One then takes the four great elements as the true body; takes birth and death as the marvelous function; takes the length or brevity of one's lifespan as the playground; and takes ultimate quiescence as returning to the root and attaining the goal." Thereupon, drawing a line with the torch, he said: "All flows forth from here. Senior Monk Nan, listen closely and without delay! Chop down the shadowless tree over there, and come back into the fire to draw back the branches."
