Ascending the hall, he brought up [the following]: “When Yunmen was in Lingzhong, a monk asked, ‘What is the matter of transcending the dharmakāya?’ Yunmen said, ‘To speak of transcending to you is not difficult, but first tell me, what is the dharmakāya?’ The monk said, ‘Please, Venerable, inspect.’ Yunmen said, ‘Putting inspection aside for now, how do you speak of the dharmakāya?’ The monk said, ‘Just so, just so.’ Yunmen said, ‘This is something learned on the long continuous benches. Let me ask you: can the dharmakāya still eat rice or not?’ The monk had no words. Later, a monk brought this up to the Hermitage Master of the Liang Family. The Master said, ‘Yunmen truly enters the mud and water.’ Zifu said, ‘Lacking one grain will not do; having an extra grain will not do.’” The Master said, “Yunmen was forged of pure solid steel, cast in raw iron; without moving tongs or hammer, sparks flew scattered. The Hermitage Master of the Liang Family set a fire in a cold place, bringing forth charity in a year of abundance. Zifu loved to poke his head into noisy places, laughed at by onlookers. Huazang closes the case according to the confession, but it still requires the various quarters to scrutinize it. If you can scrutinize it, you will fall alive into Avīci Hell.”
