The master, while at Qixia, received the invitation. Taking leave of the assembly, he ascended the hall, held up his staff, and said: "This matter, in the portion of an adept, cannot be spoken with words, nor can it be traced with footprints. Even if words and traces are both obliterated, one still falls into views of annihilation and permanence. How much more so when traveling in the morning and dwelling in the evening, the distinction between host and guest is distinct, the duck's [legs] are short and the crane's [legs] are long, and each knows the other exists! Though I become a cloud upon the solitary peak of Wansong, in the end I will remember the rock of the old man of Xiāfeng. A melody facing the wind has a distinct, rare sound; when waters are distant and mountains are long, how should the fingers be pressed?" He struck the staff.
