上堂，舉：「溈山問仰山：『大地眾生，業識忙忙，無本可據。子作麼生，知得他有之與無？』仰云：『某甲有箇驗處。』時有僧從面前過，仰召云：『闍梨。』僧回首，仰云：『者箇便是業識忙忙，無本可據。』」師云：「仰山有知人之鑑，只是用處太過。山僧則不然，他回頭，我稽首，柝半裂三，捉襟見肘。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Guishan asked Yangshan, 'Sentient beings of the great earth have busy karmic consciousness, with no root to rely on. How do you know whether they have it or not?' Yangshan said, 'I have a way to test it.' At that time a monk passed in front of them; Yangshan called out, 'Ācārya!' The monk turned his head. Yangshan said, 'This is busy karmic consciousness, with no root to rely on.'"
The master said, "Yangshan had the mirror to know people, only his application was excessive. This mountain monk is not so: if he turns his head, I bow with hands clasped; split into halves and torn into three, grasping the lapel reveals the elbows."
