1.166

上堂，舉：「趙州訪茱萸，上法堂，東覷西覷，萸云：『作甚麼？』州云：『探水。』萸云：『我者裡一滴也無，探箇甚麼？』州以主丈靠壁而出。」師云：「盡道一滴也無，鼓起滔天之浪。殊不知，趙州平白失却一條杖子。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Zhaozhou visited Zhuyu. Entering the Dharma hall, he looked east and looked west. Zhuyu said, 'What are you doing?' Zhaozhou said, 'Probing the water.' Zhuyu said, 'Here I do not have a single drop; what are you probing?' Zhaozhou leaned his staff against the wall and walked out."
The master said, "Everyone says there is not a single drop, yet it stirred up waves reaching to heaven. Little do they know that Zhaozhou, in plain daylight, lost a staff."
