Ascending the hall on the eighth day of the twelfth month, a monk asked, "'A dry tree leans against a cold cliff; for three winters there is no warmth.' What is the meaning of this?" The Master said, "The root of the tooth does not drip water." The monk said, "Why did the old woman burn down the hermitage?" The Master said, "Contending in a game, betting the counters." The monk said, "The upādhyāya also must not recklessly drill holes in the ancients' gong'ans." The Master said, "Without you, it would not be understood." The monk said, "The Old Barbarian attained the Way today; what auspicious omen is there?" The Master said, "The snow has not melted deep in the mountains." The monk said, "Yes, yes." The Master pointed with his whisk.
