2.39

乃舉：「百丈因僧問：『如何是奇特事？』丈云：『獨坐大雄峯。』僧禮拜，丈便打。」師云：「百丈故是大機大用，若非劍手相酬，幾乎落節。」

He then cited: "Baizhang was asked by a monk, 'What is the extraordinary thing?'
Baizhang said, 'Sitting alone on the Great Hero Peak.'
The monk bowed; Baizhang then struck him."
The master said, "Baizhang indeed had great capacity and great function; yet had he not been met by a swordsman, he would almost have compromised his integrity."
