2.42

復舉：「北禪歲除示眾：『年窮歲盡，無可與諸人分歲，烹一頭露地白牛，炊黍米飲、煮野菜羹，燒榾柮火、唱村田樂，免見倚他門戶傍他牆。』便下座。時有僧出云：『和尚宰牛，因甚不納筋角？』北禪拋下帽子，僧拈起云：『天寒還和尚帽子。』」師云：「簫韶九成，鳳凰來儀。」

He again cited: "Beichan instructed the assembly on New Year's Eve: 'The year is at its end, the months exhausted; I have nothing to share the New Year with you all. I'll boil a white ox on the open ground, steam millet drink, cook wild greens soup, burn firewood roots, and sing village field tunes, so as to avoid depending on other people's gates or leaning against their walls.' He then stepped down from his seat. At that time, a monk came forward and said, 'The Venerable slaughters an ox, why does he not pay tax on the sinews and horns?' Beichan threw down his hat. The monk picked it up and said, 'The weather is cold; I return the Venerable's hat.'"
The master said, "The Shao music played in nine movements; the phoenix comes to present its poise."
