2.45

小師設供上堂，舉：「章敬因小師遊方回，敬云：『汝離此間多少時？』僧云：『已經八載。』敬云：『作得箇甚麼？』僧就地上畫一圓相，敬云：『此外莫更有麼？』僧近前，畫破圓相，作禮而退。」師云：「嚴師出好弟子，二林養子不及父，但只教伊供養大眾，不必呈見解。何故？恐薄禮致怨。」

When a junior disciple made an offering, the master ascended the hall and cited: "Zhangjing had a junior disciple return from traveling around. Zhangjing said, 'How long have you been away from here?'
The monk said, 'It has already been eight years.'
Zhangjing said, 'What have you accomplished?'
The monk drew a circle on the ground.
Zhangjing said, 'Is there anything more beyond this?'
The monk stepped forward, wiped out the circle, made a bow, and withdrew."
The master said, "A strict master produces fine disciples; at Erlin, the child's rearing does not equal the father's. I just instruct him to make offerings to the great assembly; there is no need to present views. Why so? For fear that scanty courtesy may invite resentment."
