2.63

復舉：「黃檗因臨際半夏上山問訊，見檗看經，際云：『我將謂是箇人，元來是淹黑豆老僧。』住數日乃辭，檗云：『汝破夏來，何不終夏去？』際云：『暫來禮拜。』檗便打，令其去。際行數里，疑其事，再回終夏。」師云：「黃檗當時若大機大用，死盡臨際偷心，今日子孫，未致尾巴焦黃，檮林莫有再來終夏底麼？」喝一喝。

He also cited: "Because Linji went up the mountain in the middle of the summer retreat to pay his respects, seeing Huangbo reading a sutra, Linji said, 'I had thought he was a man; turns out he is an old monk soaking black beans.' Having stayed for a few days, he then took his leave. Huangbo said, 'You broke the retreat to come here; why not finish the retreat before leaving?' Linji said, 'I merely came to pay respects for a short while.' Huangbo then beat him and ordered him to leave. Having walked several miles, Linji doubted this matter and returned once again to finish the summer retreat." The master said, "If Huangbo at that time had displayed great capacity and great function and put an end once and for all to Linji's thieving mind, his descendants today would not have had their tails singed yellow. In the forest of twin timbers, is there anyone who would come again to finish the summer retreat?" He gave a shout.
