2.81

復舉：「溈山問仰山：『仲冬嚴寒年年事，晷運推移事若何？』仰山近前，叉手而立，溈云：『誠知子答者話不得。』香嚴至，溈舉前話，嚴云：『某甲偏答得者話。』溈復舉，嚴亦近前，叉手而立，溈云：『賴遇寂子不會。』」師云：「溈山若無後語，儘自包裹得去，其奈用處太過，以致栓索俱露。」

He also cited: "Guishan asked Yangshan: 'Severe cold in midwinter is an annual affair; what about the movements of the sun's shadow as they shift?' Yangshan came forward, folded his hands, and stood. Guishan said: 'I truly knew you could not answer these words.' Xiangyan arrived, and Guishan brought up the previous words. Xiangyan said: 'I alone can answer these words.' Guishan brought them up again; Xiangyan also came forward, folded his hands, and stood. Guishan said: 'Fortunately, Jizi did not understand.'" The master said: "Had Guishan not had that later remark, he could have wrapped it up completely; but alas, his function was excessive, causing both peg and rope to be exposed."
