2.88

華藏和尚至，上堂，僧問：「我手何似佛手？」師云：「老婦顰眉出醜。」僧云：「我脚何似驢脚。」師云：「曾踏趙州𭛵彴。」僧云：「人人有箇生緣，如何是學人生緣？」師云：「懶向人前拔茄樹，要去南川作化主。」僧禮拜。

When Upādhyāya Huazang arrived, ascending the hall, a monk asked: "'How does my hand resemble a Buddha's hand?'" The master said: "An old woman knits her brows and exposes her ugliness." The monk said: "'How does my foot resemble a donkey's foot?'" The master said: "It once trod upon Zhaozhou's footbridge." The monk said: "'Everyone has their cause of birth; what is the student's cause of birth?'" The master said: "Too lazy to pull up eggplant trees before others, he wants to go to Nanchuan to serve as the master of fundraising." The monk bowed.
