3.42

結夏小參：「栴檀叢林，栴檀圍繞，析之則片片皆香；荊棘叢林，荊棘圍繞，揀之則枝枝可畏。故我釋迦老子，以平等性智，攝諸比丘，同入大圓覺海，於一百二十日長期之內，撈摝澄濾，成就慧身，要且不見有禁足安居之相。今正是時，合作麼生？」卓主丈：「竹杖化龍去，癡人戽夜塘。」

Informal gathering upon entering the summer retreat: "In a sandalwood forest, surrounded by sandalwood, split it and every flake is fragrant; in a briar patch, surrounded by briars, sort through it and every branch is fearsome. Therefore our old Śākya, with samatājñāna, gathered all the bhikṣus to enter together the ocean of Great Perfect Enlightenment, within the long period of one hundred and twenty days, scooping up and straining clear to accomplish the wisdom-body; and yet, above all, no sign of foot-binding retreat was to be seen. Now is the very time; what should be done?" He struck with his staff: "The bamboo staff turns into a dragon and flies away; / The fool bails the nocturnal pond."
