5.51

錢唐鎮使在界上，凡見僧便問：「若相契即留止宿。」有二僧，從馬大師處來，便問：「大師有何方便？」僧云：「即心是佛。」便被揖出。又有二僧到，亦如前問，僧云：「非心非佛。」亦被揖出。

The military commissioner of Qiantang was at the border; whenever he saw a monk, he would question him, saying: "If we accord, I will let you lodge for the night." Two monks came from Master Mazu's place, and he asked, "What expedient means does the Great Master have?" A monk said, "Mind itself is Buddha." He bowed them out. Two other monks arrived, and he asked them as before. A monk said, "Neither mind nor Buddha." He bowed them out as well.
