6.318

師之道兮，不可得而稱，師之德兮，不可得而述，
師之行兮，不可得而聞，師之業兮，不可得而見。
道德行業聞見稱述，世人昭昭然，若其荷佛祖慧命於將仆之際，
轉凡夫於賢聖之域，
是謂之東山老人，吾不得而知焉。

The Master's Way cannot be praised; / the Master's virtue cannot be recounted; / the Master's conduct cannot be heard of; / the Master's deeds cannot be seen. / His virtue, conduct, deeds, hearing, seeing, praising, and recounting are brightly manifest to the people of the world; / yet as for his bearing the wisdom-life of the buddhas and patriarchs just as it was about to fall, / and transforming ordinary mortals into the realm of sages, / this is called the Old Man of Dongshan, and I cannot fathom him.
