8.106

上堂，舉：「九峯慈慧禪師因溈山示眾云：『汝等諸人，只得大機，不得大用。』慈慧抽身出去，溈山招之，更不回頭，溈山云：『此子堪為法器。』」師拈云：「九峯易見，溈山難見。若是淨慈則不然，待他喚不回頭，急送官楮一千與之。何故？助他買草鞋行脚。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Chan Master Cihui of Jiufeng, because Guishan instructed the assembly, saying, 'All of you only attain the great function, not the great substance'—Cihui pulled back and walked out. Guishan called after him, but he did not even turn his head. Guishan said, 'This fellow is fit to be a vessel of the Dharma.'" The master brought this up and said, "Jiufeng is easy to see, Guishan is hard to see. Were it Jingci, it would not be so; waiting for him not to turn his head when called, I would swiftly give him a thousand government paper notes. Why? To help him buy straw sandals for his itinerant pilgrimage."
