8.23

閏月旦謝秉拂上堂，僧問：「不知月之大小，歲之閏餘，是什麼人？」師云：「第一等不唧𠺕漢。」僧云：「且道，今日是什麼日？」師云：「我也不知。」僧云：「老和尚也被使得七顛八倒。」師云：「爾也脫不得。」僧云：「爭奈學人不入者保社。」師云：「豈容退欵。」僧云：「玄沙不出領，保壽不渡河，雙林今夏著許多漆桶作麼？」師云：「箇箇似餓虎投厓，人人如風擺荷葉。」僧云：「和尚手臂終不向外曲。」

Ascending the hall on the first day of an intercalary month to express thanks for wielding the whisk, a monk asked, "What kind of person is one who does not know the length of the months or the intercalation of the year?" The master said, "A first-rate clueless fellow." The monk said, "Tell me, what day is today?" The master said, "I do not know either." The monk said, "The old upādhyāya has also been driven topsy-turvy." The master said, "You cannot escape either." The monk said, "Yet what can be done about this student not entering this association?" The master said, "How could a retracting confession be permitted?" The monk said, "Xuansha did not go out over the mountain ridge, and Baoshou did not cross the river. Why did Shuanglin take in so many lacquer buckets this summer?" The master said, "Each one is like a hungry tiger plunging down a cliff; everyone is like the wind swaying lotus leaves." The monk said, "The upādhyāya's arm, in the end, does not bend outward."
