8.45

泉州崇福源長老到，上堂，舉：「楊岐和尚道：『縮却項，暗嗟吁。』白雲則曰：『大似臨嫁醫癭，卒著手脚不辨。』五祖又道：『行不成步語低聲，鼻孔依然空突兀。』以致圓悟、虎丘、應菴、密庵、松源、運庵皆戞玉鏗金，擅此家法。莫有蹈得此脈底麼？」卓主丈：「龍蛇易辨，衲子難謾。」

Senior Monk Yuan of Chongfu in Quanzhou arrived. Ascending the hall, [the master] cited: "Upādhyāya Yangqi said: 'Drawing in his neck, he sighs in secret.' Baiyun then said: 'Much like treating a goiter just before the wedding: suddenly flustered, at a loss what to do.' Wuzu also said: 'Walking without taking a step, speaking in a low voice; the nostrils are still empty and prominent.' Through to Yuanwu, Huqiu, Ying'an, Mi'an, Songyuan, and Yun'an, all struck jade and rang gold, mastering this family tradition. Is there anyone who can step into this lineage?" Striking with his staff: "Dragons and snakes are easy to distinguish, but patch-robed monks are hard to deceive."
