上堂，拈主丈云：「首山和尚上堂，汾陽出眾云：『百丈卷席，意旨如何？』山云：『龍袖拂開全體現。』汾云：『意旨如何？』山云：『象王行處絕狐蹤。』陽於此大悟云：『萬古碧潭空界月，再三撈樚始應知。』禮拜而退。時葉縣省和尚為首座，問昭兄：『汝適間見箇甚麼便禮拜？』陽云：『正是某甲放身捨命處。』」師卓主丈：「凰鳳生鸑鷟，獅子產狻猊。」

Ascending the hall, he took up his staff and said: "When Upādhyāya Shoushan ascended the hall, Fenyang came forward from the assembly and said: 'When Baizhang rolled up the mat, what was the meaning?' Shoushan said: 'The dragon sleeve brushes open, fully revealing the whole body.' Fenyang said: 'What is the meaning?' Shoushan said: 'Where the elephant king walks, fox tracks are cut off.' At this Fenyang had a great awakening and said: 'The moon in the open sky over the eternal green pool: / Only after fishing it out three times should one know.' He bowed and withdrew. At that time Upādhyāya Sheng of Yexian was the head monk; he asked Brother Zhao: 'What did you see just now that made you bow?' Fenyang said: 'It was precisely the place where I cast off my body and gave up my life.'" The Master struck his staff: "The male and female phoenix give birth to a yuezhuo; / The lion produces a suanni."
