9.33

正旦上堂：「鳶飛戾天，魚躍于囦，四夷拜舞，八表宣傳，笑看紅日上闌干。且道，歲旦剛辰，是何祥瑞？」卓主丈：「天子南郊。」

Ascending the hall on New Year's Day: "'The kite flies up to heaven; the fish leaps in the deep.' The four barbarian tribes bow and dance; throughout the eight reaches the proclamation spreads. Smiling, we watch the red sun climb over the balustrade. Tell me, on this auspicious morn of the new year, what auspicious omen is it?" Striking the staff, he said: "The Son of Heaven [performs the sacrifice at] the Southern Suburb."
