9.51

上堂，舉：「雪峯在洞山作飯頭，淘米次，山問云：『為復是淘沙去米？為復是淘米去沙？』峯云：『沙米一齊去。』山云：『大眾喫箇什麼？』峯覆却盆子，山云：『子緣法合在德山。』」師拈云：「季咸相壺丘子林，隨變不分，仗劍而逐之。洞山謂：『雪峯緣在德山。』不知是何相法？峯後果嗣德山，此又過是季咸之徒歟。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "When Xuefeng was serving as the head cook at Dongshan, he was washing rice. Dongshan asked, 'Are you washing away the sand and leaving the rice, or are you washing away the rice and leaving the sand?' Xuefeng said, 'Sand and rice are cast away all at once.' Dongshan said, 'What will the great assembly eat?' Xuefeng overturned the basin. Dongshan said, 'Your affinity with the Dharma properly lies with Deshan.'" The master brought this up and said: "Jixian read the physiognomy of Huzi Lin, who shifted with transformations without distinction, whereupon Jixian pursued him with a drawn sword. Dongshan said, 'Xuefeng's affinity lies with Deshan.' I wonder what physiognomic method this was? Afterward, Xuefeng did indeed succeed Deshan. Isn't this going even further than that follower of Jixian?"
