9.58

復舉：「溈山一日臥次，仰山來，溈乃轉面向壁臥，仰云：『某甲是和尚弟子，不用形迹。』溈作起勢，仰便出，溈召云：『寂子。』仰回，溈云：『聽老僧說箇夢。』仰低頭作聽勢，溈云：『為我厚看。』仰取一盆水一條手巾，溈洗却面纔坐，香嚴入來，溈云：『我適來與寂子，作一上神通，不同小小。』嚴云：『某甲在下面，了了知得。』溈云：『子試道看。』香嚴乃點一椀茶來，溈云：『二子智慧神通，過於鶖子、目連。』」師拈云：「溈山源脈，到五代時浸微。且道，因甚如此？」卓主丈：「過在目連、鶖子。」

He also cited: "One day Guishan was lying down. Yangshan came, and Guishan turned his face to the wall and lay there. Yangshan said, 'I am the upādhyāya's disciple; there is no need for formalities.' Guishan made a motion to rise, and Yangshan promptly went out. Guishan called out, 'Jizi!' Yangshan returned. Guishan said, 'Listen to the old monk tell a dream.' Yangshan bowed his head and made an attitude of listening. Guishan said, 'Interpret it generously for me.' Yangshan brought a basin of water and a hand towel. As soon as Guishan had washed his face and sat down, Xiangyan came in. Guishan said, 'Just now I performed a feat of supernatural power with Jizi, and it was no small matter.' Xiangyan said, 'I was down below and clearly knew it.' Guishan said, 'Try to say something, let us see.' Xiangyan then prepared a bowl of tea and brought it. Guishan said, 'The wisdom and supernatural powers of you two surpass those of Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana.'" The master brought this up and said: "Guishan's lineage gradually declined by the Five Dynasties period. Tell me, why was it so?" Striking the staff: "The fault lies with Maudgalyāyana and Śāriputra."
