At the informal gathering for concluding the summer retreat, a monk asked, "The three months of the retreat are now complete; what about the work and application during the ninety days?" The Master said, "Before the eyes, as tightly bound as before." The monk said, "In the Western Heaven they take the monastic age as proof; what is the frantic rush?" The Master said, "This lacquer bucket!" The monk said, "Thank you for the instruction." The Master said, "Chinese goldthread is not yet bitter."
