Ascending the hall upon entering the summer retreat: "Climbing a mountain, one must reach the summit; wading an ocean, one must reach the bottom. Reaching the summit, one knows the vastness of the universe; reaching the bottom, one knows the depth of the great sea. Therefore our Old Śākya set a fixed period during the three months of summer to attain realization, wishing the dragons and elephants within the Dharma to know the height of that mountain and the depth of that sea. If you eat to the full and sleep comfortably without the slightest sense of shame, you are a great sinner—do not say you were not told."
