He again cited: "While warming himself by the fire, Guishan asked Yangshan, 'Warming yourself by the fire all day long, why is there no warm vapor?' Yangshan made the gesture of warming himself by the fire. Guishan said, 'You only got the substance of the thing; subject and object are not yet there.' Yangshan said, 'I am just like this; what about the upādhyāya?' Guishan also made the gesture of warming himself by the fire. Yangshan said, 'The upādhyāya only got the substance of the thing; subject and object are not yet there.' Guishan said, 'So it is, so it is.'" The Master said: "Everyone says that father and son, Guishan and Yangshan, had two mouths but one tongue. Little do they know that the wind borrows the tiger's might to bend the grass, and the water presumes upon the dragon's reclining to emerge from the front mountain."
