Ascending the hall when a donor donated land to establish Bodhidharma's memorial: "Great Master Bodhidharma, fearing that you people would eat rice through your nostrils, specially came from the Western Heaven; having seen it clearly, he returned to the Western Heaven. Now there is the person of the Way Liu Shanfu, who, seeing an injustice on the road, donated fertile fields to the permanent monastic property to make an offering every year on this day, intending to pierce his nostrils. Today marks the first offering; tell me, does that old fellow come or not?" Striking his staff, he said, "Though gold dust is precious, falling into the eye it causes a blur."
