虛堂和尚語錄 2.44

2.44

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Layman Pang took leave of Yaoshan. Yaoshan ordered ten Chan guests to see him off to the gate. The Layman pointed to the snow in the air and said, 'Fine snowflakes, flake by flake, they fall nowhere else.'
At that time, Chan Guest Quan said, 'Where do they fall?'
The Layman gave him a slap.
Quan said, 'Layman, do not be so hasty!'
The Layman said, 'Calling yourself a Chan guest like this, Old Yama hasn't released you yet!'
Quan said, 'What about you, Layman?'
The Layman gave him another slap."
The master said, "Though they were two slaps, between them there was lifting up and pressing down, holding back and letting go."
