Laishan said, "I have lived on this mountain for twenty years and have never once brought up the matter of the ancestral school." A monk asked, "I have received word that the upādhyāya has said, 'I have lived on this mountain for twenty years and have never once brought up the matter of the ancestral school.' Is that so?" Shan said, "It is." The monk thereupon overturned the meditation bed. Shan let the matter rest. When the next day arrived, he held a general work duty to dig a pit, and ordered the attendant to invite the monk who had asked the question yesterday to come. Shan said, "This old monk for twenty years has spoken only meaningless words. Now I invite the senior seat to beat this old monk to death and bury him in the pit. If you do not beat this old monk to death, senior seat, you must be beaten to death yourself and buried in this pit." That monk packed his baggage and slipped away in secret.
