6.48

He cited: "When a monk was taking leave, Xuefeng asked, 'Where are you going?' He said, 'To pay respects to the upādhyāya of Jingshan.' [Xuefeng] said, 'If Jingshan suddenly asks you, "How is the Buddhadharma in this place?" how will you speak?' The monk said, 'I will speak when he asks.' Feng struck him, then turned and asked Jingqing, 'Where was this monk at fault that he received the stick?' Qing said, 'He questioned Jingshan through to the bottom.' Feng said, 'Jingshan is in Zhejiang; how did he question him through to the bottom?' Qing said, 'Haven't you heard it said: "A distant question has a near response"?' Feng stopped."
