Ascending the hall to thank [the donors] for the retreat feast upon holding the whisk: "Better to wrap a hot iron around one's body than to accept the clothing of a person of faith; better to pour molten copper into one's mouth than to accept the food of a person of faith. If the elder could be like this, then churning the great river into curd and transforming the great earth into gold would not be beyond measure as an offering to the elder. But simply not accepting clothing and not accepting food—how could there be so many superior merits? If suddenly someone were to practice the Dharma offering, what then?" He struck the staff: "'Giving rise to thought to receive offerings is rebuked by Vimalakīrti.'"
