Ascending the hall on a moonless Mid-Autumn, a monk asked, "When Mazu was enjoying the moon, [he asked], 'Right at such a time, how is it?' Xitang said, 'Just right for making offerings.' What is the meaning of this?" The master said, "Dig the ground and bury it deep." The monk said, "Baizhang said, 'Just right for cultivation.'" The master said, "A fine donkey-tethering peg." The monk said, "Nanquan shook his sleeves and simply walked off; what about that?" The master said, "After carrying off a handful of bones, who knows whose house the bright moon falls into?" The monk said, "Mazu said, 'The sūtras return to the canon (Zang); Chan returns to the sea (Hai); only Puyuan alone transcends beyond things.'" The master said, "Not picking up what is dropped on the road." The monk said, "If someone were to ask Yuwang, how would it be?" The master said, "Push and see." The monk bowed.
