The master then said: "On the day Ajita practiced the Way, transformation Buddhas of other realms all came to assemble. Xutang has meager conditions and a Way inferior to the ancients; blowing my own pipe and clapping my own beat, I pass the time according to my lot. Those with whom I associate are none of them good assistants: gouging out Mañjuśrī's eyes, breaking Samantabhadra's shins, smashing Vimalakīrti's seat, burning Kāśyapa's robe—such a crowd is hard to get close to. Why? They only know to subdue themselves and yield to others, unaware that when the lips are gone, the teeth turn cold."
