Ascending the hall, he cited: "Upādhyāya Daowu, because a monk asked, 'Why are the traces of a bodhisattva without supernatural powers difficult to seek?' Daowu said, 'Only those of the same Path know.' The monk said, 'Does the upādhyāya know?' Daowu said, 'I do not know.' The monk said, 'Why do you not know?' Daowu said, 'Be gone, you do not understand my words.'" The Master said: "The two words 'not know' already cut off this monk's throat; for no reason, compassion was harmed for the sake of things, and sharp edges were secretly exposed. If someone suddenly asks Nanshan, 'Why are the traces of a bodhisattva without supernatural powers difficult to seek?' I will take up my staff and strike. Why? This old monk has never meddled in other people's idle business."
