Expressing thanks to the rector, guest-master, bath-master, and attendants, [the Master] ascended the hall: "Before a single blow of the mallet is struck, it startles the ears of the multitude, the disciplinary orders pure and stern; no sooner are the three seals opened than incoming guests are tested, the eye atop the crown alive. But as for not washing off grime and not washing off dust, what, after all, is being washed?" He struck with the staff: "Danyuan served the National Teacher for a long time; he must surely know it."
