At the informal gathering for entering the summer retreat: "At Nālandā Monastery in the Western Heaven, footsteps were never confined, yet their monastic statutes were solemn and strict; in Anāthapiṇḍada's park, no time limit was established, yet many attained the Way. Therefore our Greatly Awakened World-Honoured One, possessing the true divine eye and the knowledge of past lives, observed that his descendants in the Eastern Land would not observe the precepts and Vinaya, their minds wandering along deviant paths; hence he laid down regulations to confine them, making them quickly realize the fruit of the Way within ninety days. When this mountain monk hears of this, his hair involuntarily stands on end; I do not dare take part in hearing it. Why?" Striking the whisk, he said: "Merely keeping the precepts of chickens and dogs, they do not study ancestral master Chan."
