上堂舉百丈涅槃和尚問南泉。從上諸聖。還有不為人說底法麼。泉云有。丈云。如何是不為人說底法。泉云。不是心。不是佛。不是物。丈云。說了也。泉云。某甲祇恁麼。和尚又如何。丈云。我不是善智識。爭知有說不說。泉云。某甲不會。丈云。我太殺為爾說也。師云。好大眾王老師葛藤。被涅槃和尚截斷了也。涅槃和尚葛藤。且不得動著。非唯既往不咎。亦乃盡法無民。雖然如是。還點撿得出麼。如今奪得連城璧。秦主相如盡喪身。

Ascending the hall, he cited: Master Baizhang Niepan asked Nanquan, "From antiquity onward, is there still a Dharma that all the sages have not spoken for people?" / Nanquan said, "There is." / Baizhang said, "What is the Dharma not spoken for people?" / Nanquan said, "It is not mind, it is not Buddha, it is not a thing." / Baizhang said, "You have already spoken it." / Nanquan said, "I am just like this; what about you, Venerable Sir?" / Baizhang said, "I am not a good spiritual friend; how could I know whether there is speaking or no speaking?" / Nanquan said, "I do not understand." / Baizhang said, "I have spoken far too much for you." / The master said, "Great assembly: Old Teacher Wang's vines were chopped through by Master Niepan. Master Niepan's vines must not be touched at all. Not only is the past left blameless, but also when the law is enforced to the utmost, no subjects remain. Even though it is like this, can you still assess it? 'Now having seized the jade disc worth many cities, / The King of Qin and Xiangru both forfeit their lives.'"
