舉雪峯在德山作飯頭。一日飯遲。德山托盋至法堂。峯云。這老漢。鐘未鳴鼓未響。托盋向什麼處去。山便歸方丈。峯舉似巖頭。頭云。大小德山。不會末後句。山聞令侍者喚巖頭。問汝不肯老僧那。巖遂密啟其意。山乃休去。至明日陞堂。果與尋常不同。巖撫掌笑云。且喜老漢會末後句。他後天下人。不奈伊何。頌曰。

Xuefeng was serving as the head cook at Deshan. One day the meal was late. Deshan carried his bowl to the Dharma hall. Xuefeng said: "This old fellow! The bell has not rung, and the drum has not sounded. Carrying your bowl, where are you going?" / Deshan then returned to the Abbot's quarters. Xuefeng recounted this to Yantou. / Yantou said: "Even great Deshan does not understand the final phrase." / Deshan heard of this and sent his attendant to summon Yantou. He asked: "Do you not approve of this old monk?" / Yantou then secretly disclosed his intention. Deshan then let it drop. / The next day, when he ascended the hall, he was indeed unlike his ordinary self. Yantou clapped his hands and laughed, saying: "Delightfully, the old fellow understands the final phrase! Hereafter, no one in the world can do anything to him." / The verse says:
