3.15

舉僧問淨眾。蓮華未出水時如何。眾云。菡萏滿池流。僧云。出水後如何。眾云。葉落不知秋。師云。李陵持漢節。潘閬倒騎驢。

[The Master] cited a monk asking Jingzhong: "What is it like when the lotus flower has not yet emerged from the water?" Zhong said, "Lotus buds drift across the pond." The monk said, "What about after emerging from the water?" Zhong said, "The leaves fall, unaware of autumn." The Master said, "Li Ling holds the Han tally; Pan Lang rides his donkey backward."
