3.69

舉灌溪垂語云。我在臨際處得一杓。我在末山處得一杓。又云。十方無壁落。四面亦無門。露躶躶赤灑灑沒可把。師云。灌溪恁麼說話。且道。是臨際處得底。末山處得底。雖然一箭雙雕。柰有時走殺有時坐殺。且作麼生得恰好去。揑聚放開都在我。拈來拋去更由誰。

[Hongzhi] cited: Guanxi gave the instructional remark: "At Linji's place I got a ladleful; at Moshan's place I got a ladleful." He also said, "In the ten directions there are no walls; on the four sides there are also no gates. Exposed and stark naked, red and bare, with nothing to grasp." The Master [Hongzhi] said, "Guanxi spoke like this; tell me, was it what he got at Linji's place, or what he got at Moshan's place? Although with one arrow he shot two eagles, what can be done when at times he runs himself to death, and at times he sits himself to death? And how can one attain it just right? Gathering it together or letting it go rests entirely with me; / taking it up or tossing it away—whom else does it depend on?"
